He’s Sitting High but Looking Low

“In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.”-- Isaiah 6:1

The great thing about God is that although he does sit high and look low, he does so with empathy for all of those he sees and moves to help and protect them within his will. We look up to him glorifying in his greatness, but he never looks down on us with a condescending attitude; his glory is our salvation and redemption.

As Christians, we are always happy to know that our Savior is watching over us. He keeps us in his view and will always respond in our hour of need. This text focuses on the vision of Isaiah that depicted the kingdom of God and the glory and majesty of God at the same time.

Isaiah, in his vision, saw God sitting high. The essence of what he saw was that God reigned high. He was seated on a throne, and the throne upon which he sat not only was above the others, but it transcended all other thrones, and he commanded all other thrones.

The vision painstakingly notes that in the year Uzziah died the vision was given. Uzziah was an influential and popular leader of Israel who was seen by many as the consummate protector and provider for Israel. When Uzziah died Isaiah, and the whole nation once again, saw the essence of God's being. He saw God high and lifted up.

He is in control of his world's events with all his power and glory. God's throne was a throne of glory, government, and grace; it is high and lifted up above all controversies. While God is high, he is not so high that he cannot and will not hear, empathize, and respond to the needs of the people. He is not so distant that he will not forgive when a sinner asks. Although he sits high, he is also looking low.

High, but not so high. It is good for every believer to be aware of the awesome nature of God, while at the same time, not losing focus on the fact that, while God sits high, he never loses sight of each believer and the concerns of our hearts.

NOT TOO HIGH TO BLESS US DAILY: Every morning God has new blessings in store for us! The signs of God's daily mercy are all around us. He feeds the birds of the air, the fish of the sea and critters on the ground. Despite all his greatness, he is aware of the needs of every person, every day.

He does not lose track of us. We do not have to worry. Lamentations 3:22-23 puts it this way, “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

The Lord sits high but not too high to be concerned about us.

There is no:

  • Valley that is too wide for him to cross, to reach out to us!

  • Road that is too rough for him to walk, to lend us a helping hand!

  • Burden that is so heavy that he can’t help us to bear!

  • Storm that is too mighty for him to control and see us through!

We should never become discouraged to the point of believing that God is busy taking care of the universe and is not concerned about each of his creations. Yes, he sits high, and his train fills the temple, but he still cares. When nobody else cares, the Lord is concerned about me.

Therefore, the songwriter asks, “Why should I be discouraged? Why should the shadows come? Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home? For Jesus is my portion. A constant friend is he. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.”

NOT TOO HIGH TO HEAR OUR PRAYERS: Our God sits high and is mighty in a million ways, but he is not so high that he does not hear our prayers. He knows who we are and hears us.

The beauty of being among the faithful is that we are not required to be a person of prominence or position to speak to God. Anyone can approach him. In fact, Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” You don’t need a special position or place.

What makes prayer powerful is not the words, but the fact that the words are being heard by God himself. That’s the power of prayer.

That’s why prayer changes things. Prayer can take a bowed down head and lift it up high! The Lord sits high, and his train fills the temple, but he is not so high that he can’t or won’t hear our prayers.

NOT SO HIGH HE CAN’T SEE OUR SINS: God sits high, but he is not so high that he can’t see our actions. He knows everything about us including our strengths and weaknesses. Often, we try to hide our weaknesses and sins, thinking that God either does not see them or he does not care. Despite his lofty abode in the universe, God knows.

God sits high, but he also looks low. If we draw close to him, we can have access to his storehouse of blessings! We want to draw near to benefit from his grace. His grace is sufficient for everyone. God will hear us individually, but you must go through Jesus.

1 Timothy 2:5 teaches us that, “There is one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ.” Jesus, who is the Lamb of God, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, The King of Kings, The Lord of Lords! He cared enough to die for the sins of the world!

But Early Sunday morning. He arose from the grave, with all power in his hands!
